Does anybody here have any tips for telling the time without a watch?
I got rid of my watch years ago. By looking at the sun's position and the moon's position, knowing the time of year that it is, etc, I can usually figure the actual time within 15 mins - many times within 5 minutes.
The best advice I can give to you is to toss out the time-keepers and just practice "sun-time"
A trick that I use a lot when I am boating or camping...
If you hold out your hand at arms length, and measure the suns distance to the horizon with your fingers, for every 4 fingers it is about an hour until sunset
Anyone know how to setup a makeshift sun dial on the fly?
Poke a stick into the ground. Take a compass, mark 12 facing north, 6 facing south. The shadow cast will work just like an hour hand on a clock.
Mark spots on teh ground to tell shadow positions of an object then you will be able to use a similar object in height to predict the time after practicing.
