I was walking around on some family acreage and went down into a ravine, while there I noticed (the water was really low) but an area where the rocks were stained black and the water had oily looking stuff in it. Does this mean there can be oil underground there or is someone else's pipe leaking it?

Have Jethro call the Standard oil people......:D

    Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Sometimes natural oil will 'perk' up to the surface, it isn't common, but I have seen it in California (La brea Tar Pits) and in Israel by the Dead Sea.

A decent geologist from a local Univercity would be a good resource to contact, they wouldn't be motivated by your money (usually), get it confirmed, then call Standard oil.
