Well, we're still trying to figure out the best way to store things down there. I really hope we're able to make it work; but it will have to wait until spring. This spring will definitely be a test of water in the basement. I don't think I've seen this much snow on the ground since "The Blizzard of '78".

speaking for my self, I have over 300 five gal plastic pails of different dry foods stored and I know many deer mice come to where they are stored in the winter and have not yet had any one of them chewed on.
Lucky! :)

I'm not certain I want to take the chance... but 5 gallon buckets are a lot easier to work with than 30 gallon drums (and much ligher too). Perhaps I'll try a few and if I see any signs of problems switch to the metal. They cost more, but it would be a lot cheaper than losing a bunch of food.
