Orwells beliefs are confusing since he at times was socialist and yet he wrote in very negative terms about the followers of leaders. Animal Farm being one and 1984 maybe the best example.

Or is thsi just my lack of understanding what he was promoting or saying in his books and films. I am as non socialist as it gets and consider myself a nationalist conservative.

Though Orwell was a socialist, he didn't like the type of socialism that England was headed for. I remember when 1984 came about and all the mainstream media were all hyped up saying, "See, no one is watching you like Orwell said". thing is, now there are very few places in England that are not being watched by CCTV and it's going that way here in the USA as well. His Ministry of Truth was all about spewing lies, very much examples of Hegelian Dialectic, creating a problem with a plan to solve the problem, which really wasn't a problem to begin with, but the end result is generally a loss of freedom. A good example of this is, there is a shooting, blame it on gun ownership and say the government needs to do something about it and that is a more restricted ability of gun ownership. Sad thing is the guy doing the shooting shouldn't have had access to a firearm in the first place because of background checks already in place and probably the guy was a mental case on psychotropic drugs that should have stuck out like a sore thumb in the background check. In the end those gun restrictions didn't work, other than making it harder for honest people to obtain firearms, which is what the PTB wanted in the first place.

It's amazing to me how easily ideology we don't agree with gets pawned off on what the person may or may not have been.

As Viking stated there is a difference of opinion on who he was but the real issue at hand was his book and his telling, no matter what he was are still coming truer by the minute.
