canning in the UK

Hi
I was wondering if any one knew of where in the Uk you can get items for canning?
Obviously these will need to also be a reasonable price.
Any books you could recommended for a novice that wants to get started would also be helpful.

The Ball Blue Book of Canning is a good start and should be in every home library. Garage/estate sales and second hand stores for the best prices. You might want to check out the Tattler reusable lids on the web.
canning in the UK and US is totally different .... if want to can US style you'll have to buy and ship everything into the country .... same thing with something like a pressure canner .... no such thing overseas ....
Order through Amazon, just wait for specials to help with the post costs. We have two companies in Australia importing both pressure canners (presto and all american) and Ball jars. They sell both at just a dollar or two below what it would cost me to buy from Amazon and get shipped so I go with them. I wish I'd bought my pressure canner many years ago, expensive but worth every cent!
The biggest problem is of course the cost, I'm paying $34.00AU per dozen for ball jars so it's super expensive here. I'm hoping to build up to 1500 ball jars over the next year or so and I'll buy tattler lids so I have long term storage sorted.
Even our Australian made jars etc are way over priced. The fowlers system (made here in Aust) uses seals and lids, the seals are one use and cost about $5.00 per dozen, the lids last for years but cost over $20.00 per dozen. I only buy second hand jars to save a bit of cash but it still takes time to build stocks. I use these jars in the pressure canner with no problems.
As far as books go get the ball blue book it is good, amazon have them cheap. The USDA have an online course you can do and they had no problem letting me do it even though I'm an Aussie.
I just recently bought a steam juicer from Amazon as well, can't get them down here either. Another great additionto my preserving kitchen and well worth the post cost!

Thanks to all with the advice.
I will invest in the book mentioned and do some further research before commiting to a specific product to purchase.:2thumb:
Tray go mills also sell canning items if you live in the south west of England
Amazon has reasonably priced stock as Wellrounded had mentioned them. I have the same issue they do - expense.

I live in Thailand and the jars are triple the cost back home. I am going to have friends and family bring over a few dozen pints and quarts when they can.

Wellrounded thanks for the advise about the USDA online course.

You might try asking for help on the River Cottage forum at www.rivercottage.net. Lots of smallholders and downsizers on there, who would probably be a better local resource for you.
Hi all,
Just after some advice. I am just starting to stockpile, but have such a issue with lack of space, I really have to look at things like mre's and meal replacement bars. Does anyone have any suggestions for uk available ideas or online order. I know it can work out expensive this was but I don't really have a option.
Thanks!

Are there any Mormon missions in the UK? Here in the states, you can buy bulk food and I believe they still do lending of canning equipment, and you do bulk canning at their facility.

Now that's just what I've heard and read, but I've heard and read it a lot, so I think it's probably accurate, but I havent personally gone to the local Church which is actually quite large here in SoCal to verify it.

Having to pay those prices for the jars is horrible, I hope you find a better alternative soon. That's just crazy!

Most of the LDS canneries are no longer allowing you to can your own foods. They are only selling pre-canned items. New laws and all.
try looking online for your local smallholding group, they sometimes sell off stuff like this.
I got this book this week at the Book Fair which is at my work 2 or 3 times a year.

It reminds me, I've been wanting to take a break from so much meat canning and do some experimenting with spicy relishes and jellies. :)

Although such a break may not be possible if I get a pig this weekend lol, then I'll be learning Charcuterie :factor10:
