One of the often forgotten things to stock in a prepper larder is that oh so common jug (or ten) of Vinegar. This item came in handy more times than I can remember following Hurricanes in the South and winter storms in the north.

Vinegar is widely becoming a popular choice for use in households due to the many purposes it is able to serve. In addition to its cleaning potential, vinegar can be purchased cheaply and is frequently available in large amounts at most any grocery store. It is also useful for canning and preserving food for later use, which we all know is essential in a survival situation. Is vinegar part of your daily life or preparedness plan? If not, here are 30 reasons why it should be:

    1. Keep your car windows from freezing by applying vinegar to them the night before a freeze is expected. The acid in vinegar is a foe to the formation of ice.

    2. Got itchy bug bites or jellyfish stings? Dab the affected areas with vinegar to ease the itch and clean the area for faster healing.

    3. Kill bathroom germs with full strength vinegar. It can be used in the toilet as well as around sinks and tubs to kill germs. This is particularly useful if power outages have compromised your running water and ability to keep things clean. Letting vinegar sit in your toilet bowl overnight will also remove rust stains.

    4. If Rover, Fido, and Spot are being pestered by pests, spray them down with vinegar. In addition to giving them a shiny coat, vinegar will help repel ticks and fleas.

    5. Pour vinegar on rusty screws to make removal easier.

    6. Tackle tough fridge odors by wiping walls and shelves with a 50% water-vinegar dilute.

    7. Remove lime deposits from a faucet with a paste made from vinegar and salt (1 teaspoon vinegar and 2 tablespoons salt). Rub with a cloth and the buildup will be gone.

    8. Clean dishes and mugs with the same mixture of vinegar and salt to remove stains and buildup.

    9. Marinating meat in vinegar will not only tenderize that meat but also kills bacteria. Soak meat overnight in with cup of vinegar (balsamic is good for flavoring purposes), then cook but don't rinse.

    10. Kill weeds in walkways, driveways, and around gardens with vinegar. Simply add enough to reach the roots and kill weeds at the source.

    11. Take care of odors with vinegar. Whether it is the fridge, the sink, plastic containers, or your gym shoes, a spritz of vinegar can help.

    12. In addition to removing smells, vinegar can also remove stains. Combine 2 tablespoons with cup or salt or baking soda and use it to agitate stains. Let sit overnight and vacuum the stain away, but always be sure to spot test small, out of sight areas first just in case.

    13. Revive clothing by soaking it in vinegar. Whether it is something stained or that stinks, add vinegar to the wash cycle to spruce up clothing. This will also help clean your washing machine itself and eliminate any odors brewing in there. It even helps prevent static cling after your clothes are washed and dried.

    14. Whiten your teeth by brushing with vinegar. Apply some to your toothbrush and brush like normal. Bad breath odors will be killed as well.

    15. To fight heartburn, take a swig of vinegar for fast neutralization of stomach acid.

    16. If you're almost out of condiments and need to make the last little bit count, add vinegar to salad dressing or mayonnaise. Shake it up and pour out the last little bit.

    17. Clean a messy microwave with vinegar by placing a bowl of equal parts water and vinegar inside and microwaving on high for 5 minutes. Food bits will be softened and wipe out easily.

    18. Keep eggs from cracking during hard-boiling by adding two table spoons of vinegar to the water. This will also help make the shells easier to peel off.

    19. Clean fruits and vegetables with a rinse made of 2 tablespoons vinegar per pint of water. This will help rid these items of pesticides before you consume them.

    20. Protect cheese from mold growth by wrapping it in a vinegar soaked cloth and storing in in the fridge.

    21. Apply vinegar to sunburns and rub gently for relief of pain and prevention of blistering.

    22. If the power goes out and you're forced to use candles for light, clean up any spilled wax with vinegar by wiping it up with a vinegar soaked cloth.

    23. If pet accidents plague you, clean them up with cup of vinegar mixed with a quart of water. Pour onto trouble spots and blot the smell and stain away.

    24. If dishwasher odor and stains are a problem, run a cycle with a cup of water inside.

    25. If your grill is grimy, spray vinegar on the grate and scrub with a wire brush or aluminum foil.

    26. Make your shower head strong once again by soaking it in a Ziploc bag filled with vinegar. Simply tie the baggie onto your shower head and allow it to soak for about a half an hour to remove mineral deposits and enhance water flow once more.

    27. Clean scissors with a vinegar soaked rag. Unlike water, vinegar will not cause rust.

    28. Unclog drains the natural, nontoxic way with a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar. Let the foam do the work and rinse with hot water afterward.

    29. If you have residue left behind after tape repair or removal, use vinegar to get rid of it. Apply vinegar, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then wipe residue away.

    30. If your throat is sore, gargle with water and a teaspoon of vinegar then swallow to get relief.

Although vinegar itself has a strong odor that can deter you from pouring it onto your clothes and other surfaces in your home, the smell dissipates as soon as the vinegar dries. Left behind is nothing but cleanliness and the absence of odors due to their being neutralized by vinegar. For a cost effective cleaning solution that can aid with ailments and other miscellaneous tasks, call upon vinegar and it will answer.
