My nephew joined the Army a few months ago. State championships in robotics, math score so high that them made him take the test again and he still maxed it. He got his school in robotics like he wanted and was doing well. Then he bought a P/S 4. His grades took a dump and they kicked him out of the school.

The kid is brilliant but he is addicted to computer games. He becomes a jerk after playing his games and it takes two days without the computer for him to become a human again. My other brother has a son that looks like he is going the same way.

I have never understood why anyone would want to play a game with their phone.
Ever been stuck at the DMV or Dr's office for hours with nothing to do? I carry a charger with me for those times because the games drain my battery. Solitaire, tetris soduko, angry birds...

I don't think I could do that. My kids would start throwing them across the bus at each other and then cry when they were written up.

And by my, I don't mean "mine". One of "mine" is in college and the other is home schooled.

Yep. Jury duty selection. Told the lady sitting beside me that it look like we're going to be here for a long time.

She agreed and opened her purse to pull out a paperback book.

I told her that was an excellent idea as I removed my paperback from my inside coat pocket.

I have since "upgraded" to Kindle eBooks on my iPad.

We're going to have to have a discussion on what "upgrade" means.

I had that covered. I first told them what the school librarian would have done if I had damaged an encyclopedia; she would have damaged the side of my head with it. Gee, aren't those books heavy. Then I gave a little

I know what you mean by "my kids". I took over the bus in February. It is my first bus and although I didn't know it when I started, it was one of the extreme problem buses; four bus drivers before me and the last driver being stalked and threatened at her home by one of the parents. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. Now, I wouldn't give up my kids for love nor money and I will go to bat for them if they need me to, because they have earned it.

The first time the crap hit the fan, they got the mom voice straight from the dark ages along with a "don't you EVER do that again, do I make myself clear!!!!???", followed by an ominous stare and a stopped bus. Since I never specified an actual student nor what the infraction was, I was about as clear as mud but since no one could actually be sure who was guilty of what every kid found it best to just settle down in case they were the guilty party. I have those kids so bamboozled they never know what I am talking about.

I don't write kids up because getting the parents, schools, yada yada yada involved doesn't do a lick of good and just re enforces how the problem got started.

One kid claimed he could do what ever he liked because he was ADD. I told him I was DUMB and couldn't add, would he like to be a regular kid like everyone else? Yes, well sit your tail end down and stop adding, regular kids only subtract. (see, there is a use for common core) He sat and turned out to be a great kid. He now stands at the end of the drive for the bus instead of running all over the road like a squirrel making an indecision as to where the road kill should occur, because he is a regular kid and capable of making a grown up decision to stay safe.

My kid with 'autism', had a helicopter mother and I have been able to get him to cross the road without her help and eventually to not have her escort him to the bus at all. He went from super shy hiding up front and alone to now being in the back of the bus trading hockey cards with the others. Sometimes these kids just need a chance to look out for themselves and know that they can. Labels require one to live up to them and sometimes as we all know the problem is just a lack of parenting or too much parenting.

My personal kids are all grown up. We pulled our kids from the public system when we finally woke up to what the system was doing and home schooled until we moved over- seas where they went to small international schools for their last two years of high school. My son has a BSc in theoretical math and chemistry, a minor in biology and philosophy, a MSc in computing science and has just graduated from medical school. When we left Canada, he was on track to be a loser. Moving away from the new age social ideas of a first world country to third world places where life was cheap, was the best thing we ever did for our son.

One daughter has a BSc in business the other a BSc in biology and works at a University. My son is brilliant, my daughters average but very hard workers. Obviously we are proud of them.
