I save the loose bark and pinecones for that. Oh, bills and junk mail. We get lots of junk mail. And bills....

Phideaux we also save all of the fallen twigs from our 3 ironbark trees in the yard and pile them on the front veranda throughout the year.

terri9630 that is what we use and we save all of the free newspapers, envelopes and not shiny advertising brochures for fire starters too.

Many years I would have already had a small fire by mid Oct.
Yesterday was 85 deg and 80% humidity.

I've got a pile of firewood that I got to get moved to my wood pile by the back door, as , once it gets rainy and cold , I cant drive around the yard .Need to split some more also.

Normally , I bush hog the farm by the end of Sep, but its been so dry, and hot, that I haven't done it yet. We got 6" of rain over the weekend, and now the ground is too soft to bush hog. (my GKs call it mowhoggin )Gotta get it done.Check X Done

Gotta get some things covered with tarps soon, my deck in front of my Safe Shed gets a tarp , because winter rotting leaves make a terrible mess of the deck. Gotta get that done soon, as the big Cleveland Pear tree, overhanging the deck, will start shedding soon.

I use my Bad Boy MTV all winter , because it will go anywhere and does lots of work.
Gotta go get new batteries (eight 6 V ) and get em in. Thats a backbreaking job, and spensive.

Way too many little projects yet to be done...

Yall pray for that I can get it all done, and for some cooler, less humid weather.

Jim
Now onto the next project.

Gotta get that chimney done...they calling for temps in the high 30s at night, next week.

I have so much stuff to do it's not even funny. Need to disc 2 of my garden spots and get the cover crops planted (Clover and rye) for over wintering. Finish building my grape arbors and clean out the vines and get them set up to run over the arbors. Using 4x4 post made into a T brace, then lay out hog panels over that.
Then we get back onto cleaning up the rest of the 6-7 trees that came down in a storm this year. Got part done when it happened, but gardening and keeping mowed won out till now.
And that's just the short list.

Firewood is split and stacked and the fair birds are going into the freezer tomorrow. That's going to be exhausting, 20 broilers and 7 turkeys. We still have 3 dead trees to bring down, 2 chimneys to clean, 2 Goats to take to be bred and I have to empty my "pantry" so the oldest can have her room back until the spring semester starts. THAT is going be a chore....

I love winter.
The deepest, coldest, nastiest the better.
Last year only 19 feet. Hoping for 25 this year. It's the reason I moved here.
It's taken 4 years to get to the point of being ready for it. Every year a few projects get done. I spend my short summer of 3 months getting ready for it.
Roughly 6 months of the year it's snowmobile only here.
I love the isolation winter brings. I love the challenge of it.

I used to love winter too, then I realized there were places a person could live where they wouldn't freeze their fingers and toes off.
