The car does save you, just not necessarily itself. If the lightning has jumped hundreds or thousands of feet from the cloud those few inches to the ground aren't much. Unless you are getting into or out of the car the body should direct the lightning around you.

Much like that napkin that gets overwhelmed by the bowl of cereal that winds up in your lap the tires only help so much. The benefit of the tires just increases the possibility that a tree or a metal fencepost might be a better conductor.

The tires don't provide the protection. The body/frame acts as a faraday cage to protect you while inside.
